Accessibility

Where we stand

We want Interdependence to work for as many people as possible, whatever you use to get at it. This is our own statement, from Interdependence Fitness Limited (company number 17420484), a small private company. Nobody has told us we have to publish it; we think we should.

Our goal is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, for this website and for the app. It's a goal, not a badge: we haven't had an outside audit, so we can't say we meet it, and we won't pretend to.

What we've done so far

  • The pages use proper headings and page sections, and the form fields have labels, so a screen reader can find its way round.
  • There's a "Skip to main content" link at the top of every page, which appears when you press Tab.
  • Anything you can reach with the keyboard gets a visible outline when it's selected.
  • The main text and link colours on our dark background are comfortably above the 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio that level AA asks for. That's our own sum, not an outside test, and we haven't checked every colour on every screen.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the site switches off its own small animations. The homepage clips don't start on their own; you press play.
  • Every homepage clip has a pause button you can reach by keyboard, and a short description for screen readers. The clips have no sound.
  • The website doesn't stop you zooming in.
  • The charts carry a text description of what they show.

The app is covered by the same goal. We've been checking it at large text sizes on both phones, which is how we found some of the problems in the list below.

What's not good enough yet

Here's what we know about, in plain terms.

  • Screen readers: we haven't yet done a proper test pass with VoiceOver on iPhone or TalkBack on Android, or with a screen reader on the website. We're working on it. Until we have, treat everything above as intent rather than proof.
  • Large text in the app: at the biggest text sizes some app screens don't fit. The food catalogue sheet, the library screen and the set rows in the session editor all overflow. We have these written down and they're not fixed yet.
  • Names on some app controls: an audit in early October found some icon-only buttons on the coach screens, and the row of tabs on a coach's client page, with no spoken names. We haven't re-checked them since, so assume some are still wrong.
  • Charts: on a coach's weight and calories chart, the individual points only show their value when you hover over them with a mouse. The same figures are in the table on that page, but the chart itself is no help to a keyboard user.
  • Homepage clips: each clip has a short description, but there's no full written version of what happens in it.
  • Dark only: there's no light theme. If bright-on-dark is hard for you to read, we don't have an alternative yet.

Tell us when something's in your way

If something on the website or in the app doesn't work for you, tell us through the contact page. Say what you were trying to do and what you use (a screen reader, voice control, a switch, big text, whatever it is). A real person reads it. We can't promise a fix by a date, but we'll tell you what we're going to do about it.
